The race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship nomination in Lagos for 2027 has gained new energy after a strategic meeting between Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Kadiri Hamzat and The Mandate Movement leaders, including Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
This significant political gathering took place at Obasa’s residence in Ikeja GRA, further indicating that Hamzat is the favored candidate among key factions within the Lagos APC ahead of the party’s primary election.

According to Badagry Today, Obasa shared details of their meeting on Facebook, referring to Hamzat affectionately as “my egbon” and expressing his belief in Hamzat’s potential to become the next governor of Lagos State.
“The Deputy Governor, who I believe will be our next leader, came to my Ikeja GRA home today to meet with members of The Mandate Movement,” Obasa stated.
The Mandate Movement is known as a powerful political group within the Lagos APC and has historically influenced the party’s direction during key elections. It is also seen as a main competitor to the Justice Forum, another significant APC faction associated with Hamzat.

Political analysts suggest that the endorsement from Obasa and The Mandate Movement strengthens Hamzat’s growing support within the state’s political landscape. His campaign has garnered endorsements from prominent figures such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, members of the Governance Advisory Council, and other influential party stakeholders.
Recent weeks have shown a surge in support for Hamzat, especially after former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and former PDP candidate Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, known as Jandor, reportedly withdrew from the race to back him.

However, the contest may still be competitive as Badagry-born businessman Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose has declared he will not exit the race. Ajose continues to engage with local government areas across Lagos, asserting that his increasing grassroots support gives him a strong chance in the primaries, despite Hamzat’s establishment endorsements.
As discussions ramp up across various APC factions, political experts believe that the forthcoming weeks are crucial in deciding whether the party will opt for a consensus arrangement or move forward with a contested governorship primary election.
