LASU student dies after armed robbery attack in Iba

The Lagos State University (LASU) community is mourning the loss of student Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who died from injuries sustained during a robbery in the Iba district of Lagos.

Boluwatife, who was studying History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, was attacked along with friends on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, outside the campus.

In a statement from the university, officials expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death, describing it as a significant loss to the LASU community.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello offered condolences to Boluwatife’s family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them that the university shares in their grief.

The university took immediate action upon hearing about the incident, with the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, overseeing support efforts and maintaining communication with medical staff treating Boluwatife while he was hospitalized.

Despite all efforts to save him, Boluwatife passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

In the wake of his death, university representatives met with Boluwatife’s family, officials from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and law enforcement to ensure justice is pursued.

LASU management stated that it is working closely with security forces investigating the robbery and remains hopeful that those responsible will be apprehended and prosecuted.

Describing Boluwatife’s death as a tragic event, the university called for prayers for his soul and urged the community to support his grieving family.

This incident has reignited concerns over the safety of students in areas surrounding Lagos’s higher education institutions, prompting calls from various stakeholders for enhanced security measures to safeguard  lives and property.
