Court approves new ₦200 million bail for Sowore, requires traditional ruler and Abuja property sureties

Atiku will return to Dubai - Sowore explains absence from 'occupy INEC' protest

The Federal High Court in Abuja has approved a new bail for activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential hopeful, Omoyele Sowore, set at ₦200 million. This decision came after his detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre due to alleged violations of previous bail conditions.

On Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Umar, who presided over the case, mandated that Sowore must present two sureties of the same amount for his release. One surety is required to be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the other must own a property in Abuja.

Additionally, the court ordered Sowore to submit all his travel documents to the Deputy Registrar of the Federal High Court as part of his release conditions.

Sowore is facing a five-count indictment from the Department of State Services (DSS), which includes accusations of cybercrime linked to a social media statement in which he labeled President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”

Initially, Sowore was granted bail on self-recognizance in December following his arraignment, during which Justice Umar cautioned him against making public statements that could incite the public against the President while the case was ongoing.

However, his bail was revoked on June 16 after he failed to appear for the continuation of his trial. Justice Umar subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest when neither Sowore nor his lawyers attended court.

Prior to the hearing, Sowore had informed the court that he was unable to attend due to a prior commitment in Lagos and requested an adjournment.

The prosecution, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Akinlolu Kehinde, countered this request, claiming his absence was a deliberate attempt to stall the proceedings. The court sided with the prosecution, leading to the revocation of his bail.

After the bench warrant was issued, Sowore voluntarily appeared in court on June 22, 2026, to contest the bail revocation order and sought Justice Umar’s recusal from the case. The court denied the recusal request and ordered him to be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre until his new bail application was reviewed.

During Tuesday’s session, Justice Umar approved the new bail application, reinstating Sowore’s bail under the newly established conditions.

The trial has been postponed to continue at a later date.
