Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), has said farewell to students, staff, and the broader university community as her term as the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor comes to an end.
As the second female Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history, Olatunji-Bello reflected on her tenure, describing it as a pivotal chapter in her career and a valuable opportunity to contribute to LASU’s growth.

In her farewell address, she recounted the announcement of her appointment on September 16, 2021, shortly before she officially took office four days later. She began her leadership with a strong vision and the belief that progress could be achieved through collaboration within the university community.
During her five years in office, LASU witnessed significant advancements, such as the accreditation of academic programs, the creation of new faculties and schools, the expansion of academic offerings, digital upgrades to university systems, and infrastructural improvements.
She also emphasized improvements in financial stability, students’ successes in academics and sports, research funding acquired by faculty, new partnerships, and increased global recognition for the university.

Notably, LASU was recognized as the top university in Nigeria for two consecutive years. Olatunji-Bello emphasized that these achievements were a result of collective efforts from the university community and various stakeholders, rather than the work of a single individual.
While acknowledging the challenges she faced, including disruptions and difficult decisions, she confidently stated, “Despite these difficulties, LASU is in a stronger position today than it was five years ago.”
She expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government, particularly Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their support during her tenure. She also thanked the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, student unions, alumni, development partners, and other contributors to the university’s progress.

Olatunji-Bello encouraged the LASU community to safeguard the progress made and to continue contributing to the university’s future. “The responsibility of building LASU continues; the baton simply passes from one set of hands to another,” she remarked.
As she departs, Olatunji-Bello leaves with optimism for LASU’s future, believing that its best days are yet to come. She concluded her message by encouraging students and members of the university community to take pride in LASU.
“May LASU continue to prosper. Long live Lagos State University. Long live Lagos State. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
