NECO 2025: Results released as records drop in Exam Malpractice

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal), 54 days after the last written paper.

Announcing the results at a press conference in Minna, Niger State, on Wednesday, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, said out of 1,358,339 candidates who sat for the exam, 818,492 (60.26%) secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Breakdown of results

According to Wushishi, a total of 1,367,210 candidates registered for the June/July exams, comprising 685,514 males and 681,696 females, while 1,358,339 candidates eventually sat for the papers.

Five credits and above including English and Maths: 818,492 candidates (60.26%)

Five credits and above irrespective of English and Maths: 1,144,496 candidates (84.26%)

The exams were conducted from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25, 2025.

The registrar disclosed that 1,622 candidates with special needs sat for the examination.

On malpractice, Prof. Wushishi reported a sharp decline compared to the previous year.

“In the 2025 SSCE internal, 3,878 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice, compared to 10,094 in 2024 — a reduction of 61.58%.”

He revealed that 38 schools in 13 states were implicated in mass cheating and would be invited for discussions before sanctions are applied.

In addition, nine supervisors across Rivers, Niger, FCT, Kano, and Osun States were recommended for blacklisting over poor supervision, aiding malpractice, lateness, and misconduct.

Security disruptions in Adamawa

Wushishi also highlighted disruptions in Lamorde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where communal clashes disrupted exams in eight schools between July 7 and July 25.

“A total of 13 subjects and 29 papers were affected. We are in talks with the State Government to reschedule exams for the affected schools,” he said.

Curriculum review and exam reforms

The registrar announced that with the implementation of NECO’s reviewed curriculum, the SSCE will now cover only 38 subjects, aimed at reducing result processing time.

He also reminded stakeholders of the council’s transition from the Paper-Pencil Test (PPT) model to the Computer-Based Test (CBT) model, with some public and private schools already taking part in the first phase.

Performance by states

In the state-by-state breakdown, Kano State emerged top, with 68,159 candidates (5.020%) recording five credits and above, including English and Mathematics. Lagos State came second with 67,007 candidates (4.930%), while Oyo State ranked third with 48,742 candidates.

At the bottom of the performance chart was Gabon Centre, which recorded no candidate with five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.

This year’s results highlight both progress in exam integrity and growing adoption of digital reforms, as NECO seeks to modernize Nigeria’s secondary school assessment system.
