The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos, organized a one-day sensitization programme for secondary school students to promote menstrual health and boost the confidence of the girl child.

The initiative with the theme “Beyond the Pad”, was supported by Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA to provide sanitary kits for over 150 students while also educating them on menstrual hygiene, self-confidence, and the role of boys in offering support to their female peers.
Mrs. Funmi Lasaki, NYSC Mushin local government Inspector commended the corps member for the community service project embarked upon, describing the empowerment as a worthy initiative.

Mrs. Funmi said that the community development service (CDS) platform has been made available for the corps members to impact positively in their host communities, urging corps members not to relent and take the local government beyond the height they met it.
Earlier in her address, Guest speaker and President of Dynamic Dream Builder, Miss Kawthar Alaafin, urged the students to embrace self-worth and not allow natural processes to hinder their dreams.
She said, “Menstruation should never be seen as a barrier. With the right knowledge and confidence, the girl child can achieve her full potential.”
Speaking during the presentation of sanitary kits, the Project Coordinator, Oke-Ibe Ephraim reaffirmed the NYSC commitment to gender advocacy, emphasising that no girl child should be jaded by stigma due to financial constraints and misinformation.

”The gesture was to complement government efforts towards revamping the education system across the nation and enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the beneficiary school.”
Ephraim said the girl child empowerment and sensitization was a deliberate and holistic strategy designed to build confidence, end menstrual stigma among girl children.
“Beyond academics, civic education, guidance, and counselling, moral orientation is being revived to cultivate discipline, teamwork, and leadership among genders.”
Speaking with The Lagos Voice, of the beneficiary, Husseinat Ajinolowo, a JSS3A student, said the sensitization had changed her perception.
“Before now, I used to hide whenever my period came, but after the education, I feel confident, and I know how to care for myself,” she said.
