South West won’t back Tinubu in 2027 – PDP Chieftain Olawepo-Hashim

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has warned that the South West region will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 if his administration continues on its current trajectory.

Olawepo-Hashim said the region cannot be expected to reward what he described as “failure in governance” with another mandate.

Speaking through the South West Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement (GHSM), Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, in Ilorin, the PDP stalwart urged the president to change course and deliver meaningful governance to Nigerians urgently.

“The South West will not back President Tinubu in 2027 if his administration does not change direction. Our people cannot be asked to reward failure with another term,” Olaniyi declared.

Olaniyi’s remarks were in response to comments by political commentator Reno Omokri, who had appealed to both the North and South West to unite behind President Tinubu for a second term.

Omokri compared his call to the North’s support for former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 despite widespread criticism of his performance, arguing that Tinubu had recorded modest gains in GDP growth and infrastructure.

However, Olaniyi dismissed Omokri’s statement as an attempt to manipulate regional loyalties rather than address governance realities.

“Calls like that ignore the realities Nigerians are facing today. They are playing on regional sentiments instead of addressing competence and results,” he said.

Olaniyi emphasised that Nigerians, particularly those in the Southwest, would judge the Tinubu administration based on its performance and not sentiment when the next general elections arrive.

“Nigerians are watching. Our people in the South West will decide in 2027 based on what they have experienced, not on emotional appeals or political alignments,” he stated.

Political observers note that Olawepo-Hashim’s remarks reflect growing discontent among some southern political figures over economic hardship and rising inflation, which they say have eroded public confidence in the current administration.

As 2027 draws closer, analysts predict that performance and accountability, rather than regional alliances, will play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
