Shehu Sani condemns Trump’s claim of genocide in Nigeria

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s classification of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” due to purported persecution of Christians, calling the claim baseless and deceptive.

In a post on his X account over the weekend, Sani stated that Trump’s assertion was founded on “outright falsehoods” propagated by “anarchists, lackeys, and neocolonial apprentices” intent on creating discord in Nigeria.

On Friday, Trump announced Nigeria’s designation through his Truth Social platform, claiming that Christianity faced an “existential threat” in the nation. He alleged that “thousands of Christians are being killed,” attributing the violence to radical Islamists, and stated that the U.S. was prepared to “save Christians” in Nigeria and elsewhere.

Sani refuted these claims as “misinformation and propaganda,” emphasizing that insecurity in Nigeria is not driven by religious motives. “This designation is founded on complete falsehoods and misinformation. Terrorists and bandits attack and abduct individuals regardless of their faith. The statistics from the last 15 years are telling,” he noted.

He further contended that Nigeria’s religious diversity makes the systemic persecution of one faith by another unlikely. “Given the Muslim-Christian demographic in Nigeria, it is practically impossible for one religion to persecute the other. Nigeria is like a Lion-and-Tiger scenario, not Lion-and-Zebra,” he explained.

Additionally, he accused those informing Trump’s stance of taking advantage of Nigeria’s complex social dynamics for their own benefit. “Trump has been misled by anarchists and neocolonial lackeys seeking to profit from division and unrest,” Sani asserted, cautioning that “this weapon targeted at our nation will never succeed.”

The former senator called on the international community to genuinely assist Nigeria in its battle against terrorism instead of perpetuating false narratives. “Like other nations facing terrorism, Nigeria requires sincere support to tackle its security challenges,” he concluded.
