U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to restrict federal funding to New York City if progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the upcoming mayoral election.
Trump made the remarks on his Truth Social account on Monday, calling Mamdani “a Communist with no experience” and predicting that New York City would become “a complete and total economic and social disaster” under his leadership.

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job.”
The post immediately set off a political firestorm, with critics accusing the president of trying to interfere in a local election and using federal funding as leverage to influence the outcome.
Trump’s Endorsement of Cuomo Shakes Up the Race
Trump’s comments came as he publicly endorsed Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, in a surprising twist that has reshaped the political landscape of the city’s mayoral race.
Calling a vote for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa “a vote for Mamdani,” Trump urged conservatives and moderates alike to rally behind Cuomo.
The endorsement is unusual, given Cuomo’s long history as a Democrat and his previous clashes with Trump during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, both men have signaled a temporary political alignment aimed at preventing Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, from taking office.
Political analysts say Trump’s endorsement could fracture the city’s Republican base while energizing Mamdani’s progressive supporters, who have branded the president’s comments as an “undemocratic threat.”
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman representing Queens, has emerged as a leading figure in New York’s left-wing political movement. His campaign focuses on affordable housing, police reform, and taxing luxury real estate to fund public services.
He is widely seen as the front-runner, especially after incumbent Mayor Eric Adams withdrew from the race in late September following a series of corruption scandals and plummeting poll numbers.
Mamdani’s grassroots campaign has drawn significant support among young voters and working-class communities, though it has also faced fierce opposition from business leaders and conservative groups.
The Fall of Eric Adams
Adams’ decision to bow out of the race came after months of controversy, including a federal investigation into alleged ties between his campaign and the Turkish government.
“I was wrongfully charged because I fought for this city,” Adams said in a video announcing his withdrawal, blaming “constant media speculation” for undermining his campaign.
Since stepping down, Adams has endorsed Andrew Cuomo, describing the former governor as “the steady hand New York City needs.”
His endorsement followed his own party switch from Democrat to Independent, as well as reports of a growing friendship with Trump, whom he visited at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year.
Federal Funding as a Political Weapon
Trump’s threat to restrict federal funding has raised constitutional and ethical questions. Legal experts warn that withholding funds from a U.S. city based on local election outcomes could amount to political coercion and may violate federal law.
In 2020, Trump made a similar threat to cut funding to so-called “anarchist cities,” including New York, during protests against police brutality. The move was later challenged in court and deemed unlawful.
If Mamdani wins, Trump’s administration could face renewed legal battles over the separation of federal and municipal powers.
