The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a budget of N142 billion for the establishment of new bus terminals across the country. This announcement was made during a Federal Executive Council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The approval not only covered the budget but also set a deadline for completing project procurement in 2024.

Saidu Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, informed reporters at the State House that bus terminals will be constructed in all six geopolitical zones of the country. He specified the locations of the terminals: Abeokuta in the South-West, Gombe in the North-East, Kano in the North-West, Lokoja in the North-Central, Onitsha in the South-East, and Ewu in Edo State for the South-South.

“This is the first time the government is having intervention in or road infrastructure apart from road construction. The idea of these terminals was chosen based on the choice of their economic viability”, Alkali said.
“It has come to the notice of the ministry that in spite of the significance of road transportation in Nigeria, there are no bus terminals to address the interest of millions of Nigerian commuters. As a result, we have alot of crime, road traffic accidents, proliferation of arms and ammunition on our highways.

The minister added, “So this is what informed the ministry to approach Mr. President and indeed the Federal Executive Council to seek approval of construction of these bus terminals.”
