Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, has stated that the Federal Government plans to review the ₦70,000 national minimum wage to better align it with the current economic conditions in the country.
During his address at the Good Governance Summit 2026 organized by Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja, Gbajabiamila emphasized the Tinubu administration’s awareness of the escalating cost of living and its dedication to ensuring that workers receive fair compensation.

He reminded attendees that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had enacted the ₦70,000 minimum wage law in July 2024, more than doubling the previous ₦30,000 rate. He pointed out that the wage review cycle was also reduced from five years to three to help salaries keep pace with economic shifts.
While acknowledging that the ₦70,000 wage was a significant milestone at its introduction, he stated that it is now necessary to reevaluate it given the current economic landscape.
He assured workers that the government intends to conduct the review collaboratively with organized labor rather than in opposition to it.

Gbajabiamila also encouraged labor unions to maintain constructive dialogues with the government, asserting that such collaboration would yield better results for workers and contribute to national economic growth.
In addition, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, mentioned at the event that a government’s success should be gauged by how its policies enhance the lives of workers.
He highlighted that governance should focus on providing substantial benefits, including improved living standards, quality jobs, stronger social protections, increased productivity, and wider economic opportunities.
