The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has addressed a tanker accident involving a truck carrying 45,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit on Ijako Road, headed toward Oke Oso along the Ajah Expressway in Epe.
The incident occurred earlier on Friday when a Mack tanker reportedly overturned while driving up Ijako Hill due to a mechanical failure.

In a statement released on Friday, signed by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency reported that they received a distress call at 11:32 AM. They quickly dispatched their Whales Team from the Epe Base, which arrived four minutes later.
Initial investigations revealed that the tanker’s propeller had detached from its joint, causing the vehicle to tip over. One compartment of the tanker was leaking, prompting first responders to initiate safety and containment protocols immediately. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries.
Prior to LASEMA’s arrival, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service at the Oke Oso Station had begun containment efforts to mitigate fire risks and environmental damage.

The emergency response is being coordinated under the Incident Command System, involving personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and representatives from the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers on-site.

This multi-agency effort aims to manage the situation effectively and ensure safety for motorists and other road users. Traffic has been controlled to protect motorists and prevent any secondary incidents.
LASEMA reported that an empty tanker has been arranged to transfer the petroleum product from the overturned truck before recovery operations commence. Oke-Osanyintolu praised the quick inter-agency response and the professionalism of the emergency personnel, reiterating the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through proactive disaster risk management and adherence to best practices in emergency responses.
The permanent secretary advised motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and steer clear of the area to facilitate uninterrupted emergency operations.
