Fulani council urges U.S. commission to stop associating them with Nigeria’s insecurity

Pastors, Imams urge calm after Trump’s 'Christian Genocide' claims, warn against division

The Concerned Fulani People of Nigeria have called on the United States and other international entities to refrain from associating the Fulani ethnic group with the country’s insecurity, cautioning that such narratives could exacerbate ethnic divisions and distrust.

In a statement issued by Ibrahim Barkindo Chubado, the group criticized what it termed inconsistent foreign coverage of Nigeria’s security issues, particularly allegations linking Fulani communities to banditry and violence.

They highlighted that previous U.S.-linked evaluations warned against ethnic generalization, arguing that contemporary portrayals contradict this guidance.

The group also recalled past discussions during the Buhari administration, which often connected Fulani identity with security concerns, leading to attacks, displacements, and loss of property in certain areas.

The statement emphasized that conflicts between farmers and herders are intricate, resulting from land disputes, environmental challenges, and local politics, noting that many Fulani families in states like Benue, Plateau, and Taraba are long-standing residents and should not be viewed as outsiders.

They rejected claims linking “Fulani militants” to widespread insecurity as unfair stereotypes. The group asserted that Nigeria’s security issues involve various actors, including bandits, terrorists, and separatist factions, and should not be attributed to any one ethnic group.

The Fulani Council called for fair, evidence-based reporting to safeguard national unity.
