Gov Uzodimma denounces attempted ritual on Awo-Omamma’s widow, orders investigation

The government of Imo State has vehemently condemned the revival of a cruel widowhood tradition in Awo-Omamma, Oru East Local Government Area, where a widow was reportedly pressured to participate in a barbarous ritual involving the consumption of water used to wash her deceased husband’s body.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, Chief (Mrs.) Nkechi Ugwu, labeled the incident as “barbaric, cruel, and wholly unacceptable in a civilized society.” He has mandated an immediate and thorough investigation, ensuring that those responsible will be held accountable under the law.

Initial reports suggest that Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, the widow of Mr. Odinakachi Ndubuisi, was wrongfully detained in an ambulance with her husband’s corpse by her in-laws, who alleged she was to blame for his death. The family attempted to force her to drink the “corpse water” as proof of her innocence.

Fortunately, the quick response from the Commissioner for Women Affairs, in concert with the Oru East Local Government Chairman and law enforcement, intervened to stop the ritual, following timely warnings from various women’s advocacy groups, including the Onurube Coalition, Virgin Heart Foundation, and Harsco Global Media.

Chief Ugwu stated that the Ministry acted swiftly to rescue Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children, leading to the detention of those involved.

She reported that peace has been restored in the community, and the Ministry of Women Affairs has initiated an in-depth investigation to ensure all offenders are identified and prosecuted.

Governor Uzodimma reiterated his administration’s strict stance against degrading widowhood practices, highlighting that such actions violate the laws and moral standards of Imo State.

In the meantime, Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children are currently under government protection for their safety and well-being.
