Governor Uzodimma encourages Editors to advocate for peaceful and responsible Journalism

Governor Hope Uzodimma has urged Nigerian editors to promote journalism that is both responsible and constructive in order to strengthen democracy, foster unity, and enhance national development.

The Governor made this appeal on Friday during a visit from the executive members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), led by President Mr. Eze Anaba, at Government House in Owerri, coinciding with their strategic meeting in Imo State.

Uzodimma, referring to Imo as the “home of journalists” because of its history of hosting significant media elections and conferences, emphasized that editors, as key custodians of public information, have the influence to shape public perceptions of current events. He urged them to avoid spreading divisive or incendiary content that could incite unrest and instead support messages that promote peace, unity, and rational discourse.

The Governor voiced concerns about the unregulated impact of social media, describing it as a “double-edged sword” frequently used to disseminate harmful misinformation. He called on the Guild, in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), to take more proactive measures against the irresponsible use of online platforms to protect individuals and society.

Affirming his administration’s support for the media, Uzodimma stated his government is dedicated to collaborating with journalists to advance development in Imo State and across Nigeria. He also invited them to visit recent state projects, including the Assumpta Flyover, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre, and the Orashi Electricity Company initiative, which aims to enhance electricity supply in all 27 LGAs soon.

In response, NGE President Mr. Eze Anaba praised the Governor for his amicable relationship with journalists, highlighting him as “a friend of the media.” He noted that the Guild was convening its first strategy meeting since the new executives took office and planned to evaluate the state’s projects during this gathering.

Anaba also extended an invitation to Governor Uzodimma to speak at the Guild’s annual editors’ conference set for October 2025 in Abuja, where he is expected to share insights on his administration’s accomplishments and its contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
