How I quit drinking after years of living as a born-again Christian — Former VP Osinbajo

Yemi Osinbajo, the former Vice President of Nigeria, shared a poignant account of his decision to stop drinking alcohol following a sermon he delivered.

Reflecting on his past in Mogadishu, Osinbajo acknowledged that he didn’t initially see any issue with drinking, particularly since he believed that “Jesus turned water into wine.” He admitted to enjoying an occasional glass of red wine or beer, even after his spiritual rebirth.

However, one Sunday after unexpectedly becoming the pastor of a fellowship he had preached at, he planned to purchase two cans of Heineken, return to his room, and read his Bible.

“I had no other plans besides that,” he stated.

Things changed when he walked into a restaurant within the UN compound and saw colleagues from various countries drinking. When they noticed him, they hurriedly concealed their beverages.

Intrigued, he approached a Danish coworker, Jørgen, to ask why they were hiding their drinks.

The answer struck him: “You are the priest; we shouldn’t be drinking in front of you.”

This moment offered him a profound revelation. “It struck me immediately that I couldn’t drink in this setting. How could a priest indulge?” he pondered.

Osinbajo realized that although certain actions may be allowed, not all contribute positively or constructively to his role.

From that moment on, he made a resolute choice. “I haven’t consumed alcohol since,” he shared, noting that this experience occurred long ago but has had a lasting effect on his life.
