Ghanaian international goalkeeper Charlotte Adjei has shared the remarkable story behind her rise from a young street footballer to one of the standout performers in the Nigeria Women Football League.

'I started as a striker' – Ghanaian star Charlotte Adjei reveals her rise in Nigeria

In an exclusive interview with The Lagos Voice, Adjei revealed that her love for football started at a very young age, playing in the streets and representing her school team.

“At the age of 7, I used to play ball with boys and also [the school team. Little Charlotte was so fast and smart,” she said.

Interestingly, the Edo Queens star did not begin her career as a goalkeeper.

“Yes I started as a striker before, but I was having passion for both. So one day I told my coach that I would love to become a goalkeeper, and he also helped me at that time through the process and also encouraged me. At that time, I became the first choice in the team,” she explained.

Having played in both Ghana and Nigeria, Adjei expressed her admiration for the football structures in both countries.

“Well, I will say that I love both countries, Ghana and Nigeria, because the two countries have something good for players. The way they get time for players and show them the right thing,” she said.

Adjei, who previously shone at Remo Stars Ladies and earned Goalkeeper of the Season honours, credited her success to discipline and support.

“The secret behind that dominant campaign was hard training, determination and encouragement from my coaches and the team owner as well,” she revealed.

She also pointed to the role of continental competitions in shaping her confidence.

“CAF Women’s Championship has really helped me to improve on myself and also have confidence in myself whenever I see myself in the goal posts,” she added.
