Atiku will return to Dubai - Sowore explains absence from 'occupy INEC' protest

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and prominent human rights activist, has vowed to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in their current forms if elected President of Nigeria.

Sowore made the declaration via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, outlining his proposed education and youth development reforms.

According to Sowore, JAMB represents an unnecessary bureaucratic layer that should be removed. He argued that tertiary institutions should independently handle admissions through a transparent, merit-based system.

“When I become President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria: @JAMBHQ will be abolished. Admission into tertiary institutions should be determined by the institutions themselves under a transparent, merit-based system, not by another layer of bureaucracy.”

Sowore also criticised the compulsory nature of the NYSC programme, promising to replace it with a more practical alternative.

He stated that the NYSC, in its current form, would be scrapped and replaced with a two-year voluntary National Job Corps.

This new initiative, according to him, would focus on guaranteeing participants meaningful employment, practical skills acquisition, entrepreneurship support, and clear pathways to permanent careers.

“Nigeria’s young people do not need more compulsory schemes. They need opportunities, jobs, skills, and the freedom to choose their future.”
