Lagos govt commences compensation payments for Owonroshoki landlords facing demolition

Lagos State has commenced compensation payments for landlords in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, whose properties are designated for demolition as part of an environmental renewal and regeneration project. The payment process started on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Oworonshoki traditional ruler’s palace, attracting community leaders, civil society representatives, security personnel, and media coverage. This initiative is viewed as a thoughtful effort by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to promote a compassionate and inclusive approach to urban development.

TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), indicated that the compensation came after comprehensive assessments and verifications were conducted in collaboration with local stakeholders. He noted that the regeneration initiative was essential due to the presence of illegal and unstable structures along drainage channels and waterways, creating significant environmental and safety risks for residents.

Animashaun emphasized that Oworonshoki was prioritized within the state’s extensive urban renewal agenda, as some buildings were deemed unsafe and obstructed crucial water pathways. In keeping with the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, the affected residents are compensated before any further demolition occurs. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership and acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Permanent Secretary for Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki.

Reports indicate that some landlords received between N3 million and N4 million in compensation based on their properties’ valuations, while those with wooden plank houses, known as Kpako houses, were compensated between N300,000 and N500,000, reflecting their lower market value. Additionally, new properties identified as high-risk and located within drainage expansion zones are set for demolition as the regeneration project progresses to its next phase, aimed at enlarging water channels and enhancing road accessibility.

A total of 79 verified beneficiaries are expected to receive their compensation in two phases, with the first batch already receiving their payments on Thursday and the second batch scheduled for Friday at the same location.
