Lagos State has introduced an Investigative and Interview Protocol for Child Sexual Abuse, developed by the Ministry of Justice in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme and the Cece Yara Foundation. This significant initiative aims to enhance the protection of children and improve the prosecution of sexual abuse cases.

The protocol seeks to reduce trauma during investigations, uphold the dignity of the young victims, and ensure that the statements collected are reliable, admissible, and conform to the highest investigative standards.
At the launch event, Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, called the initiative “a bold and necessary step towards eradicating child sexual abuse in our communities.” He emphasized that the protocol is designed to empower children who are often silenced by fear and shame, ensuring that every investigative action prioritizes their safety, maintains evidence integrity, and facilitates prompt, compassionate justice.
Mr. Pedro praised the newly certified forensic interviewers for their dedication and encouraged them to approach their significant roles with professionalism, empathy, and integrity. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering collaboration among law enforcement, social workers, medical professionals, and legal representatives to address child sexual abuse cases with the sensitivity and urgency they require.

RoLAC’s State Coordinator, Mrs. Ajibola Ijimakinwa, highlighted that this initiative aligns with RoLAC’s goal of advancing reforms in the justice sector and protecting vulnerable populations. She stated, “This protocol will ensure that child victims achieve justice without enduring further harm. Our partnership with the Lagos State Government exemplifies what can be accomplished when stakeholders work together towards a shared objective.”
Mrs. Bola Tinubu, the Founder of Cece Yara Foundation, underscored that the real triumph over child sexual abuse relies on the ongoing, united actions of society. She remarked, “Every child deserves to be heard in a safe and supportive setting. This initiative equips professionals with the necessary tools to listen, comprehend, and act in the child’s best interest.” Furthermore, she stressed the importance of collective responsibility beyond just implementing protocols and training experts to protect children.

The event culminated in the awarding of certificates to the newly qualified forensic interviewers, who are trained professionals ready to conduct sensitive child interviews in line with global best practices.
