Muslims are not planning to eliminate Christians from Nigeria — Sultan of Sokoto 

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has refuted claims of a religious agenda in Nigeria, stating that Muslims have no intention of targeting or eliminating Christians in the country.

Speaking at the inaugural triannual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, where religious leaders and government representatives emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding, he highlighted that many violent incidents wrongly labeled as religious conflicts contribute to mistrust and division.

He remarked, “I want to clarify that Muslims are not hastily planning to reduce the Christian population in Nigeria.” He urged Nigerians to distinguish between crime and religion, stressing, “Let’s get the narrative correct; it’s not about religion. We need to stop connecting religion with these issues.”

Additionally, he cautioned against misrepresentation of religious authority, stating, “Understanding Arabic does not qualify you as a Sheikh; it’s merely a language, making literacy essential.”
