Nigerians experiences frustration as inflation hits cooking gas price

Nigerians are experiencing frustration as the price of cooking gas reaches ₦1,800 per kilogram due to a shortage. This sharp increase in the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is affecting various cities, including Lagos, Ogun, and Ibadan, following a nationwide supply interruption caused by a three-day strike by oil workers protesting employee dismissals at the Dangote Refinery.

Although the strike has now ended, the temporary disruption led to empty gas depots, resulting in rationing and increased prices. In many locations, cooking gas prices have risen from approximately ₦1,000 per kilogram to between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800.

In Abuja, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder ranges from ₦17,000 to ₦18,750, depending on the area. For example, in neighborhoods such as Wuse, Garki, and Kubwa, the price per kilogram is between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500, while Jabi has some outlets offering a 12.5kg refill for around ₦17,000. Many retailers reported running out of stock by Sunday, and those still selling gas raised their prices significantly.

Similar price hikes are seen in Lagos and Ogun States, where the cost per kilogram jumped from about ₦1,000 and ₦1,100, respectively, last week to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,800 over the weekend. Across Nigeria, both households and small businesses are facing challenges as gas prices continue to rise daily, with no immediate relief anticipated.
