NiMet forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flooding in Nigeria in 3 days

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread rain, thunderstorms, and possible flooding across several states between Sunday and Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Saturday, the agency warned of moderate rainfall and thunderstorms expected to affect the northern, central, and southern regions of the country within the next three days.

NiMet predicted moderate rains on Sunday morning in Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba.

The agency raised a flood alert for Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi, warning residents to take precautions.

For the central region, intermittent rains are expected in Plateau, Niger, and the FCT. At the same time, afternoon showers are forecast in Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi, where flash floods are also likely.

In the southern region, cloudy skies are anticipated in the morning, followed by moderate rains in Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Edo, Ondo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. A flood alert was issued for parts of Osun State.

Monday’s Forecast

Thunderstorms with rains are expected across the northern states, including Bauchi, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna.

In the central states, light showers are forecast for Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and the FCT in the morning, with rains expected later in Plateau and Kwara.

For the south, cloudy skies will dominate the morning, before light rains fall in Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Lagos.

Tuesday’s Forecast

Morning thunderstorms are expected in Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are likely in Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa.

The central region (FCT, Niger, Plateau) will experience cloudy skies in the morning, followed by moderate rains by evening.

In the south, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Cross River, and Lagos will witness light rainfall.

Safety Advisory

NiMet urged residents to take precautionary measures, stressing the risks of flash floods, low night-time temperatures, and strong winds.

“Residents are advised to stay informed through regular weather updates from NiMet,” the agency concluded.
