Many Nigerians are quick to assume any form of fever is Malaria, a habit that has led to widespread self-medication and delayed diagnosis of other illnesses. Recently in Lagos, health experts cautioned not all fevers are malaria.

They advised that individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, body pain and weakness should avoid rushing to take malaria drugs or antibiotics without proper diagnosis.
According to the Lagos State Ministry of Health, residents are advised to adhere to these procedures when experiencing fever, visit a nearby chemist shop or health facility, Request a Malaria Antigen Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).
A Malaria Antigen RDT is a quick finger- prick test that provides results within minutes and helps determine whether a person has malaria.

Health authorities explain that if the test result is negative, the fever might be linked to other serious infections such as Flu, COVID, Lassa Fever, Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Meningitis and host of other serious infections.

The Ministry emphasized its “test before treatment” policy, which aims to ensure accurate diagnosis before administering malaria medication.
Experts warns that self medication without prescription can increase the risk of incorrect treatment, worsening actual sickness and increased drug resistance.
Residents are therefore urged to adhere to proper medical guidelines and seek professional care when experiencing symptoms of fever.
