The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has praised the leadership of the Nigeria Boxing Federation for what he described as a well-organised National Boxing Week and Commonwealth Games open trials currently underway in Lagos.
Olopade, who attended bouts at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Gym inside the National Stadium, Surulere, commended the federation for its commitment to developing the sport across multiple levels, from athletes to coaches and officials.

Encouraged by the performances on display, the NSC boss announced an increase in Nigeria’s boxing slots for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
“Based on all I have seen today, I am confident that boxing stands a better chance of securing more podium placements at the Commonwealth Games. Hence, we have decided to increase the number of our pugilists to the Games,” he stated.
The Director General also assured the federation of continued institutional support beyond the ongoing trials.
“The National Sports Commission will continue to support the Nigeria Boxing Federation beyond Boxing Week. We are committed to proper camping programmes to prepare our boxers adequately for the Commonwealth Games,” he added.

A total of 120 boxers, including home-based fighters and members of the diaspora, are competing in the open trials. The event, which began on Sunday, March 1, is set to conclude with a grand finale on Friday, March 6.
