Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government, arguing that its much-praised economic reforms have not alleviated poverty or enhanced the welfare of citizens.
Referencing a World Bank report released on October 8, 2025, Obi highlighted that the number of Nigerians living in poverty has surged to 139 million, an increase from 87 million in 2023, indicating that more than 50 million individuals have slipped into poverty within two years.

In a response shared on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter), Obi described this situation as “a heartbreaking reflection of how deeply our nation is failing its citizens.” He expressed disappointment that instead of fostering urgent discussions on addressing the crisis, the government’s approach was centered on dismissals.
“This signifies that in just two years under the APC administration, over 50 million Nigerians have been plunged into poverty,” Obi stated. “What is particularly alarming is that this shocking revelation has not triggered an emergency national conversation on how to effectively lift millions out of poverty.”
Obi contended that despite the Tinubu government’s various celebrated reforms, poverty continues to escalate due to an absence of a clear strategy or commitment to directing benefits into productive sectors.
He called on the administration to adopt economic policies that prioritize the needs of people, emphasizing production over consumption, supporting small businesses and farmers, and boosting investments in education and healthcare.
“Reforms should be intentional and closely aligned with people-centered policies that ensure government spending directly benefits Nigerians by alleviating poverty,” he asserted. “No nation can prosper while a majority of its population remains trapped in poverty. With effective leadership, we can make Nigeria thrive for all its citizens.”
