Nigerian international and Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has voiced concerns over the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) consistent selection of Morocco as the host for major tournaments and awards ceremonies. She has called for greater inclusivity, urging other African nations to be given the opportunity to stage continental events.
Oshoala, who currently plays for Saudi club Al Hilal, shared her thoughts on the social media platform X on Thursday, questioning the concentration of football activities in the North African nation.

“The big question here is when will this whole @CAF_Online compensation to Morocco end? Awards, tournaments and all… it’s getting boring now,” she wrote. “We need other countries to step up. Everything concerning African football happens in Morocco; it feels like that’s the new HQ.”

The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year proposed that Nigeria could successfully host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by partnering with its neighbors. She argued that the geographical proximity of countries like Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, and Togo makes a co-hosting arrangement a feasible option if the necessary commitment is there.
“We can co-host with our neighbours if we are serious,” Oshoala stated. “Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, Togo are all next door… you can’t tell me two of these five neighbouring countries can’t co-host AFCON.”
Her comments have surfaced as Morocco’s influence in African football continues to grow. The nation is currently hosting the 35th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, with CAF highlighting its modern infrastructure and organizational capabilities as key factors in its selection. This is part of a larger sporting strategy for Morocco, which will also co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
While CAF has praised Morocco’s readiness to host major events, Oshoala’s remarks have reignited a debate about regional balance. Her call to action emphasizes the need for other African countries, including Nigeria and its neighbors, to be granted the chance to host the continent’s premier football competitions.
