Oyo Attack: DHQ reassures Nigerians there is no terrorist presence in South-West

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has rejected claims suggesting that terrorists have set up a base in the South-West. They emphasized that the recent attack in Oyo State was a singular criminal event and not indicative of any broader insurgency in the area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted that the military is ramping up efforts to rescue victims abducted during the attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Onoja condemned the kidnapping of innocent students and school personnel as “unacceptable” and assured the public that the Armed Forces are dedicating all necessary resources to ensure their safe and unconditional return.

He noted that troops have made contact with the kidnappers and are actively pursuing them throughout forest regions.

β€œThe full force of the Armed Forces is being mobilized to guarantee the safe return of all abducted individuals,” he stated.

The defense spokesperson also indicated that the military previously carried out clearance operations in the Old Oyo National Park, successfully neutralizing several criminal elements.

He emphasized that intelligence reports do not back the existence of any organized terrorist group in the South-West, cautioning against spreading narratives that could incite fear among the populace.

β€œThe incident in Oyo State is an isolated criminal act and does not reflect the establishment of a sustained insurgent network in the area,” Onoja said.

He further mentioned that joint operations with other security agencies and local vigilantes are in progress to eliminate criminal activities and restore peace, urging residents to continue providing reliable information to support rescue missions.

β€œThe Armed Forces will persist until all abducted victims are recovered and those responsible are held accountable,” he added.
