She indicated that the agency handles between 400 and 450 new cases each month, emphasizing that domestic and sexual violence are still significantly underreported despite the increasing number of complaints.

“We know we haven’t begun to address this issue fully, as these types of crimes are among the most underreported worldwide, but we are encouraged that more individuals are gaining confidence in the system,” she stated.

Vivour-Adeniyi noted that more victims are reaching out for help through emergency numbers, agency offices, and social media.

Additionally, she highlighted that domestic violence encompasses more than just physical abuse, including emotional and verbal abuse, as recognized under Lagos State law.

“Just because the abuse is not physical does not make it any less harmful. People should not suffer in silence,” she urged.

She cautioned parents against concealing sexual abuse cases involving their children, as doing so is punishable by law. According to her, parents who are found guilty of hiding sexual offenses could face up to three years in prison. She encouraged families to report abuse promptly and utilize available support services to assist victims in obtaining justice and care.
