POWA, Nurses partner for major Lagos outreach to Support Police Families

The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) has sealed a strategic partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) ahead of a large-scale welfare outreach targeting police families in Lagos.

The collaboration was formalised during a high-level meeting in Abuja, where POWA President, Olufunmilola Disu, hosted a delegation led by NANNM National President, Haruna Mamman.

The planned Lagos outreach marks the second phase of the POWA Cares Initiative, a nationwide programme aimed at improving healthcare access, economic stability, and overall well-being among police families.

According to Mrs Disu, the success of the maiden edition in Abuja highlighted the urgent need for structured interventions within police communities.

Building on that momentum, the Lagos edition is set to go beyond medical services. Organisers revealed that the outreach will include educational support, with scholarships awarded to 10 children of police officers to study nursing.

The initiative is designed not only to support families but also to strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce by encouraging young Nigerians from police backgrounds to pursue careers in nursing.

Mrs Disu, herself a trained nurse, described the partnership with NANNM as essential to delivering impactful and people-focused care.

She noted that the welfare of police officers is closely tied to the well-being of their families, stressing that empowering those families ultimately contributes to better national security outcomes.

Discussions during the meeting also touched on the growing concern over unlicensed medical practitioners. Both POWA and NANNM agreed on the need for stronger collaboration to safeguard public health and ensure professional standards in healthcare delivery.

The Lagos outreach, scheduled for later this month, is expected to bring together healthcare professionals, volunteers, and key stakeholders to provide integrated support services for police families across the state.

Observers say initiatives like POWA Cares reflect a broader shift towards holistic welfare strategies within Nigeria’s security sector, recognising that effective policing depends not just on officers, but on the stability and well-being of their households.
