Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has honored the successful Team Lagos contingent at the 2025 National Youth Games in Delta State, where the team topped the medal standings for the first time in the competition’s history for athletes under 15.
Team Lagos triumphed at the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba last month, outpacing the host state, Delta, by securing a total of 110 medals—52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze.

During a reception held at the Lagos State House in Ikeja on Friday to recognize the athletes, coaches, and officials, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the young athletes for their outstanding achievements and praised the Lagos State Sports Commission, led by Director-General Lekan Fatodu, for this historic accomplishment.
The sports enthusiast Governor reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to nurturing young athletes to reach their full potential, encouraging them to balance their sports careers with their education.
Expressing confidence that these young athletes will compete at top levels in both national and international arenas in the future, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured that the state would provide the necessary facilities and enhance opportunities for youth engagement in sports.
A key highlight of the reception honoring the Team Lagos athletes was the announcement of various cash rewards for medalists, non-medalists, coaches, and the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission.
Each of the 41 gold medalists received N500,000, with teams of two also receiving N500,000, while gold medalists in other team sports events were awarded N1 million.
For silver medalists, Sanwo-Olu announced N300,000 for the 22 individual winners, and the same amount for pairs, while those in team events received N700,000.
Additionally, 19 individual bronze medalists were rewarded with N250,000 each, with teams winning bronze also receiving N250,000 and those in team events getting N500,000.
Athletes without medals received N100,000 each, while 61 coaches were awarded N300,000 each, and the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission received N25 million.
This unprecedented initiative by the Governor to host and reward athletes underscores the state government’s commitment to youth development, aiming to nurture future champions and leaders.
Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, noted that this reception transcends financial incentives and creates a memorable experience that will inspire the youth.
He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s faith in the potential of young people, emphasizing his continual support and investment in sports infrastructure and human development.
