Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed his sorrow over the death of the esteemed Oba of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, who also served as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. The respected leader, known as the Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, passed away at the age of 89.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu characterized Oba Akran’s passing as a profound loss, not just for the residents of Badagry, but for Lagos and Nigeria as a whole, highlighting his significant influence as a revered monarch.

Sanwo-Olu extended his condolences to the populace of Badagry and the late Oba Akran’s family, acknowledging the monarch’s departure as a substantial loss to the traditional institutions of the state.
He stated: “On behalf of my wife, the government, and the people of Lagos, I offer my sympathies to the people of Badagry, the family of the deceased, and the traditional institutions affected by the passing of Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
“The death of Oba Akran is a significant loss for the historic town of Badagry, and he will be deeply missed. He was a respected figure and made meaningful contributions to the advancement of his community, Lagos State, and Nigeria throughout his life.
“As a distinguished traditional leader, Oba Akran leaves behind a legacy that the people of Badagry will continue to honor. He served as the guardian of his kingdom’s traditions, customs, and cultural heritage for nearly half a century. He was a unifying force, harmonizing diverse interests within his domain and promoting Badagry’s historical sites and cultural festivals on national and international platforms, thereby enhancing tourism and cultural exchange.
“He also leveraged his position to foster growth and development in the ancient town. I encourage his family, friends, subjects, and the entire community of Badagry, whom he represented and served diligently, to work towards immortalizing him.
“I pray that the Almighty grants rest to the soul of the late monarch and provides comfort to the royal family and the people of Badagry Kingdom and Lagos State as they bear this profound loss.”
