Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to Women’s empowerment in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s focus on economic empowerment for women, men, and young adults. He made this declaration at the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) event recently at the De Blue Roof, LTV Complex in Agidingbi, Ikeja.

Represented by the First Lady, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the Governor emphasized that the program reflects the state’s goal of establishing an inclusive economy that enables residents to achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence.

According to him, “This initiative is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to poverty alleviation through skills acquisition. By empowering our women and young peoplei, we are creating sustainable livelihoods and laying the foundation for a more prosperous Lagos.”

The Governor commended the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) for spearheading the initiative, describing it as a strategic intervention that provides participants with entrepreneurial skills, start-up kits, and mentorship to thrive in today’s competitive economy.

While giving her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, noted that the programme was carefully designed to reduce unemployment, uplift families, and strengthen community resilience. “What we are witnessing today is the practical outcome of a vision that empowers citizens to take charge of their future. The government remains committed to expanding this programme so that more Lagosians can benefit,” she stated.

During her remarks, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support of the Ministry’s empowerment efforts. She also praised the facilitators, beneficiaries, and partners for their roles in making MESI successful, encouraging them to apply their skills productively and become advocates for self-reliance.

The MESI program has enabled thousands of students to graduate from the WAPA skills acquisition centers, with around 70 percent of the beneficiaries trained in various fields including fashion design, catering, carpentry, ICT, and household product production, helping them gain both technical skills and start-up resources.

Through the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, the Lagos State Government has further demonstrated its commitment to combating poverty through empowerment, innovation, and creating opportunities for residents across all 57 local government areas and council development areas in the State.
