Security concerns spark backlash as Nigeria set to face Iran in an international friendly

Nigerian football fans are increasingly concerned about Iran’s participation in the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament during the March 2026 FIFA international window.

Middle East tensions might jeopardise the Super Eagles’ friendly matches against Iran and Jordan, scheduled for March 27 and 31 as part of the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament, and cast doubt on Iran’s participation in the US-hosted FIFA World Cup.

It is an opportunity for the Super Eagles to measure themselves against strong opposition outside the African continent while fine-tuning preparations ahead of other competitive fixtures.

However, the mood among supporters has shifted. Following a match announcement by the Super Eagles on their official X page, several Nigerian fans took to questioning the decision to proceed with the tournament amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

While there has been no official indication of cancellation or postponement, the uncertainty has sparked intense debate within Nigeria’s football community.

One user, Drey RMCF (@MadristaDare), shared a photo alongside the caption: “Which club in their right sense will release their players to go and play in Iran amid all these tensions?”

Another user, Mr. Ola (@mr__yatt1), wrote: “With the level of security volatility in the Middle East, it’s safer for Nigeria to cancel all forms of travel to the area. You can’t accurately predict what will happen with the current invasion of Iran by the USA and Israel forces.”

Similarly, a fan identified as @FUR776247036432 commented, “They better cancel the Match, make missiles, or go fly touch Nwabali.”

Another user, @ChibuaE, questioned whether officials were fully considering the situation: “Una no hear say war dey middle belt? Cancel these matches with immediate effect, irrespective of how much they have paid the NFF… The boys’ life matters more than the money.”

Amazuiro Nnaemeka @AmazuiroE wrote: “Just cancel all these fixtures. We don’t want anything to happen to our darling Super Eagles.”

Some criticism was directed squarely at the Nigeria Football Association (NFA). A fan, Melvin (@Greatpeter02), demanded to know why the federation would contemplate sending players to such a fixture amid ongoing tensions.

“You people should stop playing. Except only the NFA and their committees will be available for selection,” he wrote.

For now, fans await further clarification from football authorities, as debates continue over whether sporting priorities should proceed amid wider geopolitical uncertainties.
