Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Dangote dismissed concerns about job losses from the company’s newly launched fleet of trucks, stressing that the initiative will instead create thousands of employment opportunities.

Truck drivers earn more than graduates

According to Dangote, drivers in his company not only earn far above the national benchmark, but in some cases, they also take home salaries higher than fresh university graduates.

“Every truck is about six people. So these trucks they are fighting over will create 24,000 jobs,” he said.

“Our salary is almost three or four times their own. After five years free accident, a driver can apply and get a house loan. Our drivers earn more than graduates. If you look at what they earn in a month, it’s almost four times the national minimum wage.”

NUPENG membership should be voluntary

Dangote also reacted to ongoing tensions with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), stressing that membership of the union should remain a voluntary decision for workers, not an imposed requirement.

He maintained that the company’s investment in trucks and human capital was focused on job creation and safety incentives, rather than job cuts.

Job creation through trucks

Dangote explained that fears about mass unemployment resulting from his company’s logistics investments are misplaced. Instead, he argued, the new trucks would open up more employment opportunities across the country.

“Each truck involves at least six people, and with the volume we are introducing, about 24,000 jobs will be created,” he added.
