Lagos emerges ‘Second Best’ in 2025 NECO SSCE Results

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal), with Lagos State emerging as the second-best performing state in Nigeria.

Announcing the results in Minna on Wednesday, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed that Lagos produced 67,007 candidates, representing 4.93%, who scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics.

This performance places Lagos just behind Kano State, which topped the chart with 68,159 candidates (5.02%), while Oyo State secured third place with 48,742 candidates.

Overall result statistics

A total of 1,367,210 candidates registered for the June/July 2025 exams, comprising 685,514 males and 681,696 females, while 1,358,339 candidates eventually sat for the papers.

Out of these, 818,492 candidates (60.26%) scored five credits and above including English and Mathematics. 1,144,496 candidates (84.26%) scored five credits and above irrespective of the two core subjects.

The exams were conducted nationwide from Monday, June 16 to Friday, July 25, 2025.

Lagos’ strong showing

Observers have described Lagos’ ranking as proof of the state government’s continued investment in education, teacher training, and digital learning resources.

With 67,007 students achieving the benchmark of five credits including English and Mathematics, education stakeholders say the performance underscores the state’s drive to remain a leader in academic excellence despite its large population and urban challenges.
