The United Nations and its partner agencies have intensified emergency response efforts to contain a renewed outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), amid growing concerns over its spread into urban centers and neighboring areas.

Speaking during a press briefing in New York, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that humanitarian and peacekeeping teams are working closely with national authorities to curb the outbreak and stabilize the worsening health situation.

The province of Ituri Province has been identified as the epicentre, with the towns of Rwampara, Mongbwalu, and Bunia recording the highest number of infections. Health experts warn that the dense population in these areas increases the risk of rapid transmission.

To support containment efforts, the UN peacekeeping mission in the country, MONUSCO, has deployed critical logistics, including vehicles, ambulances, and a helicopter to facilitate the movement of medical personnel and supplies. These resources are being coordinated with the World Health Organization (WHO), which is leading technical response operations.

Authorities are also closely monitoring the situation in North Kivu Province, where confirmed cases have emerged in major urban centres such as Goma, Butembo, and Katwa which were the locations previously affected by Ebola outbreaks. Public health officials say surveillance systems have been strengthened, with screening introduced at key entry points and adjustments made to response strategies, including remote coordination where security challenges persist.

Further concerns have arisen following reports of a new confirmed case in South Kivu Province, specifically in the city of Bukavu, signaling a potential expansion of the outbreak zone.

In response, health teams are scaling up contact tracing, deploying motorcycles to reach remote communities, and reinforcing rapid response units to contain new infections swiftly.

The outbreak has also drawn attention in neighboring Uganda, where authorities remain on high alert due to cross-border movement and the risk of imported cases. Regional collaboration has been strengthened to ensure early detection and coordinated containment measures.

Health experts emphasize that while Ebola remains a serious and often fatal disease, early detection, isolation, and supportive care significantly improve survival rates. Ongoing international support is expected to play a crucial role in preventing a wider regional health crisis.
