Bamidele Salam, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, has stated that many Nigerian leaders ignore the growing issue of insecurity because their children are educated in private institutions or abroad, unlike the children of ordinary citizens who attend public schools.
During a plenary session, which was captured in a widely shared video, he emphasized the urgent need to enhance school security nationwide and referenced a Yoruba proverb to highlight societal inequality in the face of violence.

Salam expressed that many leaders are out of touch with the realities of public schooling, noting, “As we all know, most children of those in leadership today are enrolled in private schools, some even abroad. He called for the establishment of a specialized security force to protect schools, stating, “There needs to be a resolution for a dedicated security structure tailored for the education system.”
He also mentioned the existence of a school security program under the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, which he criticized for being inadequately funded: “It never received the necessary funding during its operational period.”
He underscored the need for immediate action, arguing that if the government can ensure the safety of public officials, it should also be able to protect vulnerable schoolchildren: “If we can secure thousands of public office holders in Nigeria, we can certainly safeguard the children of the less privileged.”
In response to the recent insecurity incidents in Oyo State, he urged the government to take more proactive measures and offer support to the victims of these attacks.
