According to a release from WAEC’s Public Affairs Department on Thursday, the glitch was discovered during an internal post-release review of key subjects, including Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.

This development comes after several candidates and stakeholders raised concerns over the accuracy of some of the results published on WAEC’s online portal.

In response, the Council has temporarily suspended access to the results checker portal to enable it to correct the identified issues. Candidates have now been advised to recheck their results after 24 hours.

“WAEC sincerely regrets to inform the general public of technical issues discovered during the internal review… The Council, being a responsive body that is sensitive to fairness and professionalism, has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches,” the statement read.

The council revealed that the issue was linked to an innovation called paper serialisation, which was introduced in an effort to combat examination malpractice.

This method, already adopted by a national examination body, involves personalising examination papers with unique sequences per candidate — a system meant to ensure integrity and curb collusion during exams.
Despite its intention, the serialisation process reportedly introduced errors in the processing of results for certain subjects.

“It is also worth noting that this is in line with best practices in assessment,” WAEC added, while emphasising its commitment to fairness and transparency.

WAEC concluded the statement by extending apologies to affected candidates, promising to restore full access to corrected results within 24 hours.

“We appreciate their patience and understanding as we work diligently to resolve this matter with transparency and urgency.”

The Council reaffirmed its dedication to excellence, integrity, and quality service in serving the educational aspirations of Nigerian students.
