‘Wear Tinubu cap or exit my meeting’ — Gov Okpebholo instructs Edo Commissioners

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has firmly warned his newly appointed commissioners that anyone in the Executive Council who does not wear the ‘Asiwaju cap,’ commonly known as the Bola Tinubu cap, will be expelled from meetings.

Governor Okpebholo issued this warning on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony for 20 new commissioners and members of various state boards.

He stated that the cap symbolizes loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited for helping his administration successfully form the new cabinet.

“Let me begin by saying this wouldn’t have been possible without a responsible President,” Okpebholo remarked. “You see this cap I’m wearing? I will not tolerate any commissioner not wearing it. In Exco, if you’re dressed traditionally without the Asiwaju cap, you’re leaving.”

The governor made it clear that his administration would not accept corruption or indiscipline among appointees and emphasized that the appointments were made based on merit, not political favors.

“Your nominations are not a reward or patronage but rather a duty to serve the people of Edo State. My priority is on delivering service and achieving real results, not engaging in propaganda,” he stated.

Okpebholo called on the newly appointed commissioners to commit themselves to the state’s development and make significant contributions to the welfare of the Edo people.

Speaking on behalf of the appointees, Festus Ebea expressed gratitude to the governor for his trust and assured him of their dedication to his vision for the state.
