Why I allow communities to bargain with bandits — Katsina governor

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has clarified his position on permitting certain communities to negotiate with bandits in an effort to restore peace in the region.

In an interview with Channels Television, he explained that this decision was influenced by the current situation and the specific requests from residents in affected areas.

“As long as it leads to the desired outcome, who wants to continue fighting?” he said, recalling how communities approached him with their concerns.

“They expressed their willingness to negotiate with the bandits, stating, “We have suffered greatly and are not receiving adequate protection from security forces, so please allow us to negotiate in the hopes of achieving peace.”

He agreed to their request but made it clear that he would not be directly involved.

He further noted that some communities have enjoyed over a year of peace following these negotiations. “As of now, these communities that negotiated with the bandits have not experienced any attacks,” he stated.

Justifying his support for the negotiations, he acknowledged, “I allowed them to pursue this path because it reflects their wishes, and as their governor, it is my duty to respect their mandates.”

Radda highlighted that many of these communities now experience relative stability, allowing residents to safely return to farming and their daily routines without the fear of attacks.
