2027: It is a sin not to vote during elections — CAN Chairman

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Rev. Dr. Sunday Emma is urging Christians to make their voices heard at the polls.

During an interview with reporters in Lafia on Tuesday, he emphasized the importance of voting, particularly in light of recent elections like the Nasarawa bye-election. Emma highlighted that Christians have both a biblical and civic duty to honor authority by casting their votes.

“We’re committed to informing and educating people because that’s part of our role. We can’t just wait and hope for the right outcomes without doing our part,” he noted.

The clergyman made it clear that for believers, voting isn’t optional. He said, “When an election is announced, it’s your duty to get out there and vote.”

He encouraged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to take full advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and urged those who haven’t registered yet to do so before the period ends.

“If we give up, we are allowing the wrong things to continue. When bad leadership remains, we face complaints, hunger, poor education, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of development,” he pointed out.

The CAN chairman urged voters to protect the integrity of their votes peacefully and expressed his belief that INEC will hold fair elections. However, he expressed concern over the troubling trend of election results being decided in court instead of at the polls.

“Elections should be determined by the votes cast by the people,” he remarked, while also urging members of the judiciary to stay neutral and ensure that justice is served.
