Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publicly disclose the academic certificates and credentials of all candidates vying for elective positions.
He believes this transparency would enhance public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process. Obi shared his thoughts in a Facebook post on Tuesday, where he reflected on the questions included in the INEC nomination form he filled out.

He pointed out that one of the inquiries in Section E of the form asks if a candidate has ever been declared a lunatic or deemed of unsound mind. This led him to ponder whether Nigeria’s political leaders exhibit the qualities of responsible and sound-minded leadership.
He emphasized that the country’s escalating security and economic issues require more focused attention.
“When Nigerians, including children and security personnel, are being abd¥cted into the bushes, citizens cannot travel safely on our highways, several million Nigerians are uncertain where their next meal will come from… should politics really be our primary preoccupation?” he asked.

Obi maintained that responsible leadership would declare the nation’s security and humanitarian crises a national emergency and mobilise security agencies, experts, community leaders and other stakeholders to address them urgently.
He also referenced another question on the nomination form asking whether a candidate had ever presented a forged certificate to INEC, arguing that the electoral commission should publish the academic qualifications submitted by all contestants in the interest of openness and accountability.
“Transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Nigeria’s problems are too serious for politics as usual. It is time for leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to service,” Obi stated.
