Labour congress criticizes Government: ₦1 million salary means little with weak Naira

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that a ₦1 million monthly salary would hold no value for Nigerian workers if the naira continues to weaken and the economy remains unstable.

NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized this point in Abuja, highlighting that rising inflation has diminished the real worth of wages. He argued that the focus should be on both strengthening the naira and enhancing living conditions rather than just increasing salaries.

“Even if Nigerian workers were to earn ₦1 million, it would lose significance if the naira lacks value,” he remarked, stressing the necessity for a system that allows workers to sustain themselves throughout the month.

Ajaero expressed concern over the escalating cost of living, pointing out that basic necessities such as food, transportation, and housing have become too expensive. He attributed the worsening situation to the surge in fuel prices, which has had a cascading effect on the economy.

Regarding the discussion on minimum wage, he stated that there are currently no negotiations taking place and emphasized that the process follows legal guidelines that cannot be expedited for political motives. He assured that discussions will commence at the right time before the existing wage structure expires.

Ajaero also called on the government to promptly tackle inflation and establish a robust energy policy to protect Nigerians from global economic fluctuations.

He raised alarms about the confusion surrounding the pension system due to the rise of multiple unions, explaining that the NLC is working with stakeholders to restore order and ensure correct remittances.

As Workers’ Day approaches, Ajaero indicated that any protests would likely focus on states that have not yet fully implemented the approved minimum wage. While many states have complied, he pointed out deficiencies in implementation, particularly within local governments and the education sector.

Reiterating the NLC’s position, Ajaero stated that the congress remains dedicated to advocating for policies that guarantee workers’ welfare and promote economic stability.
