As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Josiah Amupitan, emphasized on August 18 that the commission’s commitment is to ensure a fair election and that it will not support any candidate or political party.
Speaking during the National Peace Accord in preparation for the upcoming election, Amupitan sought to reassure the public that INEC will remain impartial, stating, “INEC has no vested interest in the outcome of the elections. The commission does not endorse any candidate or political platform.”

He urged political stakeholders to treat the election campaign as an exchange of ideas rather than a combative environment. “Nigerians are looking for solutions, not insults. They deserve to hear clear, actionable manifestos,” Amupitan remarked to those in attendance.
The INEC chair assured Nigerians that the commission is focused on building on past successes to deliver a trustworthy election. “I am happy to share that our preparations for the 2027 elections are on track and we are enhancing our logistics to support a large national workforce of 1.4 million personnel across over 176,000 polling units,” he stated.
