President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa’s (rtd) tenure as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for an additional five years.
The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirming that Marwa, who was initially appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, will continue to lead the agency until 2031.

Marwa, a retired senior military officer from Adamawa, previously chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020. His notable career includes serving as military governor of Lagos and Borno States and holding important roles in the Nigerian Army, such as brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade and Aide-de-Camp to former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma.
Additionally, he has worked as the academic registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Marwa holds advanced degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

During his leadership, the NDLEA has achieved significant milestones, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of more than 15 million kilograms of illegal substances. The agency has also strengthened nationwide campaigns against drug abuse, particularly among young people.
President Tinubu commended Marwa’s accomplishments, describing his reappointment as a strong endorsement of his leadership, and urged him to continue his efforts to combat drug cartels and traffickers threatening the country.
