Few hours to start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), all the 24 teams participating at the continental showpiece were notified about a substantial increase in prize money of the coveted prize.
This was confirmed by the head of African Football Federation (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe during a press conference held on Saturday in Rabat.
A nation that emerges victorious next year in the grand finale to be staged on 18th January, will walk away with USD 10 million, a 43 % increase compared to what the winner pocketed at the last edition.
Ivory Coast, hosts and eventual winners of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations landed USD 7 Million in a tournament that recorded huge attendances in addition to attracting a huge global appeal.
The move by CAF to increase the financial rewards, mirrors the commercial rise of African Football especially coming at a time when the continent is all focused at the events in Morocco.
The runners-up at the Total Energies CAF AFCON will receive USD 4 Million while the two semi-finals will receive USD 2.5 Million.
