Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has warned Nigerians against the reckless recording and sharing of videos featuring police officers, especially those filmed during their official duties for the purpose of content creation.

During a discussion with the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) in Abuja, Disu voiced his concerns that this trend could lower officers’ morale, misrepresent public perception, and hinder current security operations.

He criticized the sharing of outdated or misleading videos that are incorrectly labeled as recent events, stating that such practices contribute to misinformation and public anxiety.

He stated, “The public should not distract police efforts with these video clips. We are focused on addressing legitimate concerns, but there are instances where individuals are using old clips from long ago, which is unacceptable.”

Emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to accountability, transparency, professionalism, and respect for human rights, Disu highlighted the importance of finding a balance between public scrutiny and the operational needs and welfare of officers.

He remarked, “Police personnel make significant sacrifices in fulfilling their constitutional roles and deserve public support and understanding. While accountability is crucial and we are committed to transparency, recordings and public interactions with police officers should be conducted responsibly and not be used to harass them or compromise their effectiveness.”

The IGP added that officers work under difficult circumstances and should not be discouraged by actions that could impact their morale.

He concluded, “Police officers often put their lives at risk to safeguard citizens and ensure public safety. It’s crucial that public behavior and media portrayals do not demoralize those who are dedicated to their duties.”
