The federal government has ratified the construction of a new carter bridge in Lagos, which is set for N359 biillon, and another N134 biillon for the improved component of the 152-kilometre Kano-Katsina Road.
Notably, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) led by President Bola Tinubu, N493 billon has been allocated for the two significant infrastructure initiatives, aiming to enhance the 152-kilometre-Kano-Katsina road, alongside building a new carter bridge in Lagos state.

According to the announcement made by the Minister of Work, David Umahi to the state house correspondents, after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the major adjustment to the budgets for the Kano-Katsina road have been implemented to combat the current economic challenges.
Furthermore, David Umahi divulged on the previous administration intention to originally split the road project into two separate sections.
“Section One, covering 74.1 kilometers, was initially awarded in 2013 at N14 billion and revised to N24 billion. It’s has now been updated to N68 billion. Section two, spanning 79.5 kilometers and awarded in 2019 for N29 billion before increasing to N46 billion, has been further adjusted to N66.115 billon”, Umahi said.

The minister also provided basic background information about the carter bridge in Lagos state, tracing back to 2013 and 2019, for a thorough account of underwater evaluations.
Umahi divulged that the contractor handling the underwater and structural repairs, informed that the bridge is completely damaged, and suggested a rebuilt.
“The cost of constructing a new carter bridge is estimated at about N359 billion, and discussions have been initiated with Deutsche Bank regarding potential funding.”
Additionally, the Federal Executive Council approved the hiring of seven specialized contractors under (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing) model. Expectedly, these contractors will secure a thorough investigations, create designs, and handle biding for renovation of new construction of both the carter and 3rd mainland bridges, in Lagos state.
