The Federal Government has allocated approximately N500 billion from the May 2026 revenue of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to create a national security emergency intervention fund before distributing the monthly revenue to the Federal Government, states, and local councils.
Sources familiar with the situation indicated that this deduction was made during the initial FAAC process. One insider noted that the security intervention fund significantly contributed to the disparity between total revenue generated and the final amount available for distribution.

After accounting for these deductions and other statutory adjustments, the total distributable revenue for May amounted to N2.3 trillion, which was allocated amongst the three levels of government: the Federal Government received N818.68 billion, states got N759.14 billion, and local councils received N534.28 billion. Additionally, oil-producing states were granted N188.13 billion as a 13% derivation.
This move occurs amid persistent security challenges nationwide, including issues such as insurgency, banditry, kidnappings, and resource-driven violence.
The Federal Government has been steadily increasing its security budget, acquiring military equipment, and enhancing intelligence operations to address these threats effectively.
